Urban Hjärne (1641-1724) was one of the most famous Swedes of his time. He was the royal physician and a prominent scientist, as well as an alchemist. He is known for founding Sweden's first health spa in Medevi, and for his efforts to stop the witch trials in Stockholm in 1676.

Hjärne's Testament was the universal elixir that he (or possibly a couple of his more entrepreneurial sons) created for good health and which was said to prolong people's lives. That it originally contained opium surely contributed to its success.

Hjärne is said to have created the elixir as a gift to his many children (thirteen died in childhood, thirteen survived to adulthood!). The elixir was meant to give them long and healthy lives, and additionally, the sale of his legacy to future generations could support them. Hence the name Hjärne's Testament.
